The restoration of Wye Undercroft has been a painstaking but exciting project for a number of years. Now that we are ready to open to the public, we invite you to explore our website for historical imformation, renovation detail and our future plans.
The Wye Undercroft
A undercroft is an ancient wine cellar, and Wye's fine example was designated as a Scheduled Monument in 1986.
Visitors can easily identify the top of the cellar entrance at ground level, but the size, scale and beauty of what lies below can only be appreciated by a visit underground.
The Undercroft in Wye would almost certainly have started life as a wine shop and opened in the late 13th century.
Timeline
From the 13th to the 21st Century is a long time!
See the history of Wye Undercroft condensed into an easy to assimilate timeline before looking into more detail
What does the future hold?
The Undercroft will initially be opened for short guided visits to allow the history of the site to be understood.
In time we hope to involve local wine producers to arrange tasting events and develop a display of items linked to the ancient wine trade.
